View of San Francisco

San Francisco is a beautiful tourist city… is true……But right after you go west of Powell street, there is different face.

View of Market streetIt reminds me a bit like Downtown Los Angeles……..

Untouched old buildings and small shops….there are no more tourists around this area.

If you see this kind of sign….it is not a nice area……

Although it is looking rough, some developments are going on. In a few years, I would be a bit different again…….

City hall_San francisco

City hall is located behind Market Street too……

Turk Street_San FranciscoWhen I visit some cities, I just don’t like going only touristy area. It is usually beautiful….but at the same time, you are not seeing the reality of the life of the city. That is how, I also go to a bit or roughest area too.

For this, compact Panasonic GX1 was extremely handy.

GX1 +PZ14-42mm is small enough to put in my jacket pocket.

San Francisco has quite pretty city landscape. Every street has different design and it is

just fun to walk around as long as you don’t get tired of uphills……

When we say San Francisco, everyone think of Golden Gate Bridge…..but It is better to remember…..Golden Gate Bridge for daytime and Bay Bridge is for night time.

Classic tram in San Francisco

When we say San Francisco….everybody think of Cable cars…..but this tram is more practical and people use as everyday’s transportation.

Cable cars are for hilly roads and trams are for flat roads.

Cable car at Powell Street, San Francisco

I just started using Panasonic GX1 in this trip to San Francisco.

But I still brought LEICA Digilux 3 because first of all, I was not sure how good the Panasonic is…..

I paid $3,000 for Leica 5 years ago and now, I only paid Less than $500 for Panasonic…what’s a difference…..

At least I was happy about the images from GX1, so I decided to use LEICA with only telephoto zoom because I did not have one for GX1.

Due to the four-thirds small sensor makes depth of field deep and it makes easier to take clear view easy.

During past 5 years, technology changed a lot. Digilux 3 is not good with High ISO, slow AF or temperamental AE….but the image itself is not bad at all…or some are even better.

They say Leica can capture the atmosphere of the sheen as well. Maybe it is true and it is still working with Olympus lens.

Now, we are in the middle of Autumn in Vancouver. Sky is clear and still the weather is good.

Unlike normal year, we haven’t had much rain in this autumn.

Due to upcoming Halloween and Thanks giving day…..the market is quit busy at this time.

In this dark & busy place, Panasonic GX1 did quite good job. It is one of the best snap shot camera.

"Hi Doggy!" "Hi Sweaty!"

“Hi Doggy!” “Hi Sweaty!”

It was a nice & comfortable Sunday afternoon.

Happy Thanks Giving!….to anyone who lives in Canada.

Adobe Photoshop_ Merge images to make better photo

Pike Place Market_ Typical street snap shot

Pike Place Market_ Typical street snap shot

Street snap shot is not easy because there are so many people walking around and there is no way to control unless you have power & money to block the street.

This is the typical street shot…..well….not too bad…. apart from a person crossing right in front of me….

Well….it was lucky at least I had another similar shot at the same place.

Pike Place Market_ Typical street snap shot 2

Pike Place Market_ another shot at the same place

This is the another one….but I think this one is less interesting. On the first image, there is a ferry at the back and people on the sidewalk are looking better than this one.

So…..lets merge those 2 images.

I put the 2nd image on top of the 1st one.
Then, go to the 2nd image layer and set a Layer Mask to mask out where you don’t want.

In this case, I only wanted the cover up the person at the right hand of the first image.

Pike Place Market_ Final

This is how I got…..

At least it looks much better than before.

During the film era, timing was everything for street shooting. But today, you we can do so many things on Photoshop. So, If you see a nice view, it is good idea to take several at the same angle. This will help you quite often.

Panasonic GX1 vs Leica Digilux 3 in San Francisco

I bought the Panasonic Lumix GX1 right before the trip to San Francisco.

But it is a bit risky to 100% depend on a brand new camera….at least to me…..

So, my 5 year old Leica Digilux 3 came with me as well. But due to the weight, Leica was consentrated to telephoto lens Olympus Zuiko Digital 40-150mm F3.5-4.5 because I haven’t had a telephoto lens for Panasonic GX1.

Well…..It is not bad at all….although the Olympus lens is a kind of economy class.

Newer Panasonic looks clearer….but that is because it is shorter lens. Leica one looks a bit dull because of the longer lens and that is exaggerating  the amount of back light.

I quite like both of them and I can say Panasonic is still keeping “Leica taste” which they learned when they started digital camera with Panasonic LC5 and later LC1 and L1.

Now, Olympus which share the same micro four-thirds system shifted to SONY sensor and people says they are better. But I think Panasonic still have some advantage such as “Leica taste” which does not appear on catalog spec.

Today, people enlarge images on computer screen and check resolution easily. That kind of simple test rates what is good and what is bad.

There are some more things to talk about photography…..but people simply think image with no noise are better.

Panasonic has more noise than SONY sensored Olympus….but it does not mean Olympus is better on everything.
